The fourth edition of the Indian Super League finally kicked off and had a contrasting theme to it throughout the weekend. Blunders, goals and stale mates, it practically had everything on display.
The carnival after a useless opening ceremony kicked off with ATK traveling to Kochi. Kerala Blasters drew the opening game of the Indian Super League 2017/18 season 0-0 against defending champions ATK. Both side had their moments but neither could break the deadlock. The second game of the ISL saw North East United face newcomers Jamshedpur FC in a match where both teams struggled to find their rhythm for the better part of the game. Although the teams played out an uneventful stalemate at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, both teams did show promise going forward in the tournament.
The first goal of the new season took it’s own sweet time to come by when in the 25th minute, when a counterattack saw Brandon Fernandes and Ferran Corominas combine forces with a one-two as Corominas netted this ISL’s first goal. The lightning pace of Goa’s counterattacks often meant that Chennaiyin defenders were short on numbers when facing peril. The first half ended with Goa finding a couple of more goals in a game which eventually ended 3-2 courtesy of keeper Laxmikant Kattimani who almost gifted two goals to Chennaiyin. The show opened in the Garden City to a near packed Sree Kanteerava stadium as debutants Bengaluru FC lived up to their favorites tag by battling past the dogged defense of Mumbai and securing a comfortable win of 2-0 in their first ever ISL outing. Edu Garcia put one in the net with a brilliant grounded shot at the hour mark and skipper Sunil Chhetri found his 50th goal for the Blues in the injury time after a collapse in concentration of the Mumbai side.
In all, the first weekend didn’t exactly burst to life with the first two games being goal less stalemates, the goal fest that followed tilted the scales though. Which team did you think looked the most complete following the first action of the league?
