The Indian U-17 national team is preparing for possibly the biggest competition of their lives and India Football Team captain Sunil Chhetri interacted with the boys on Thursday and gave them the necessary pep talk while handing over their new jerseys.
Chhetri, who led the team to a 2-0 win against Macau in the Asian Cup qualifiers, told the young lads, “This Tournament is going to be the most important days of your lives. Listen to your coaches, get your massages done, eat at the right time, sleep at the right time, so that when the World Cup finishes, you don’t have any regrets.” Trying to comfort the young lads Chhetri went on to add, “this team is much better than we were and I am not just saying it for the sake of it. The level in which you guys are playing right now is amazing. I was coming from my house to here and thinking what should I tell you guys but all I want to say is ‘enjoy it’.”
India have never been part of a World Cup, so understandably, a lot of eyes will be on the youngsters and with that, there might be some nerves come next month. There’s perhaps no Indian footballer better at handling pressure right now than Chhetri. “We would all love to be at your place. I would give 15 years of my career to play in the World Cup, where you are playing. This is brilliant. So make the most of it. Don’t take pressure but listen and go and give your best and the whole country will applaud.” the 33-year old Indian captain told the young players, who hung on to his every word.
An inspirational session with their hero was a golden opportunity for the young team who would have taken a lot of positives from it and will be looking to give their everything for the nation come the opportunity next month.
