Chhetri becomes 4th highest international goal scorer

Sunil Chhetri’s goal in the 1-0 win vs Kyrgyzstan in Bengaluru was not just important, but record breaking. The goal was his 54th strike for India, making him the 4th best goal scorer amongst active international players, overtaking England captain Wayne Rooney in the process who has scored 53 goals so far.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Clint Dempsey boast better goal scoring records for their countries than India’s ‘goal-machine’. Chhetri is also the only player from the Top 5 on this list who has achieved the record in less than 100 appearances.

Clint Dempsey of the USA currently sits in the third spot on the list with 56 goals for his country and Argentina’s Lionel Messi is second with 58 goals. Brazil’s wonder kid Neymar sits at number six, with 52 goals in 77 appearances.

Could Sunil Chhetri move further up the list to the number two position? We all certainly hope so!
