Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Mann Ki Baat broadcast encouraged people to embrace the FIFA U-17 World Cup and extend their wholehearted support to the event. PM Modi’s monthly radio address, on Sunday was also the announcement of a National Talent Search Portal (NTSP), intended to provide talented kids with a platform from where they can get the required exposure.

Speaking on the upcoming World Cup PM Modi said “It’s a matter of great joy for the youth of the nation that from 6th to 28th October, India will be hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Twenty four teams from all over the world are going to make India their home. Come on, let us all welcome the young guests from all over the world with the fervor of sports. Let’s all enjoy the sport and create a sporting environment in the country.” The Sports Ministry’s decision to launch a nation wide talent search portal was also inspired from AIFF’s scouting programme for the WC and it could be revolutionary. What the portal aims to do is provide a platform where young, talented kids can upload their videos and bio-data. Then the Sports Ministry will shortlist them and call them up to the nearest Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre for selection trials so that the talented ones are provided funding and training, along with a stipend.

The Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu today launched the National Sports Talent Search Portal. Talking about the Portal, Naidu said, “The platform of National Sports Talent Search Portal will be a game changer and enable the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and Sports Authority of India select the best. “This initiative will not only help in identifying the best talent, but will also provide a level playing field to all the applicants and create a competitive environment.”

The interest in various sports in India is increasing at an exponential rate, including football with the WC around the corner. NTSP can offer kids a direct shot at being recognized and cherry-picked by the top coaches in the country. Do you think it is a good move to unearth talent at grass-root level?
