Mohun Bagan ran riot against ATK scoring 13 goals in their first match of AIFF U-15 Youth League on Thursday at the Barasat Stadium. The scoreboard at the end of the game flashed complete dominance by the Green and Maroons at the end of the game.
Mohun Bagan, one of the legacy clubs of the country, elected against playing in the ISL following disagreements with the AIFF over their demands to waive the ₹15 crore franchise fee. However, there are rumors of the two leagues merging in the near future. In such a scenario, the likes of Bagan and East Bengal have to compete against the likes of ATK which would definitely spice up the city rivalry. The game played between the youth teams of the two clubs have grabbed a lot of eyeballs with the staggering scoreline that the game ended with.
Skipper Shambhu Deb, Mohammed Fardin Ali (4 goals) and Surajit Ghosh scored a hat trick each. The other three goals were scored Sanjoy Oraw, Pintu Murmu and Arnab Sharma. Mohun Bagan pumped in six goals in the first half before netting seven more after the change of ends. The goal fest has raised questions on the youth system in place at ATK. Fans have been questioning the quality and the structure at place in the club. Not to forget this is the Same team that refused Atletico de Madrid to build an academy in Kolkata. The fact is that it is very difficult to have competitive youth team without a decent academy churning out young players on a regular basis.
The margin of the victory shows the gulf in class between the youth setups of Bagan and ATK. Clearly something needs to change and that too quickly if ISL teams wish to produce quality Indian players in future.
